I had written my personal notes for this book last month and had yet to finish it. I’m still listening to the audiobook, and I feel that these notes will be helpful (To see Part I of The Talent Code, click here). I hope this helps you understand how to accomplish “Deep Practice” skills that are needed to get to Mastery.
The Three Rules of Deep Practice
- Try Again, Fail Again. Fail Better.
~ The tingle of surprise when we see something from someone that is so unexpected: “Wow! Where did that come from?”
Ex: This reminds me of seeing my son morph into a Rubik’s cube speed demon. I’ve seen his progress over the past 4 years in getting faster and faster at solving them. Plus, I think about all the difficult algorithms he has to memorize as well.
2. Chunking is important!! The way skills are built through deep practice. Each individual skill is a combination of small little activities that builds into one large chunk.
“Just take it one step at a time”, but do this as well as the author observed students that were masters at what they did ~~> Step A) Look at the task as a whole (1 BIG CHUNK), Step B.) Divide it into the smallest possible chunks Step C.) They play with time (slow it down, then speed it up)
Step A.) Staring at, listen to it, look at it ~~> see it where you can visualize yourself doing it. Form of imitation. Absorb it! Focus on technique.
Step B.) “In 7 weeks, most students will learn what others will learn in a year.” (Meadow Mount) ~ place where Yo Yo Ma and others went to school. They use chunking to the extreme.
Slow it down:
Attend more closely to errors/ Grow Myelin this way (Must be slow and methodical to push the boundaries of your learning)
Self Regulation: Observe, Judge and Strategize (Coach yourself) ~ Customize your deep practice
Connect all the “pieces” of your practices into chucks.
Rule 2: Repeat it
Firing the impulse through REPETITION! There is no way around this (Irreplaceable)
Skills can evaporate if you do not practice (Myelin is living tissue)/Daily practice matters
Deep Practice: Building and honing your circuits
Experts: 3-5 hours/day
Talent hot beds: Less than 3 hours/day
Ages 6-8: 3-5 hours/week
Older teen: 15 hours/week
Rules 3: Learn to Feel it
You need to have a strategy! Don’t fool around with practice.
Deep Practice: Know where you are! Get a balance point ~ sense the errors when they come. Errors should bother you, you need to “feel” it, and fix it.
Words to describe most productive practice: Attention, Connect, Build, Whole, Alert, Focus, Mistake, Repeat, Tiring, Edge, Awake.
(Reaching, falling short, and reaching again) ~ Divine Dissatisfaction
Japanese schools: 44% inventing, thinking and struggling with underlying concepts. American students: 1%
You don’t learn by gliding along ~~>American Teachers typically do this to get the class moving along. (Big mistake, as we learn so much from the struggle)
Staggering baby ~~> we instinctively avoid this, but this is how we get skill!
CHAPTER 5: PRIMAL CUES
Motivational fuel (Ignition) supplies the fuel + deep practice (10,000 hours) = wraps of myelin (SKILLS SKYROCKET)
WHAT IS YOUR SENSE OF SELF/THE IDEA OF YOUR FUTURE SELF (A SPARK):
I AM a Musician, I AM a (fill in the blank)
(This was crucial to many of the children in a study reviewed in the book. Once they ‘saw’ themselves as being able to be part of a certain group in the future, their skills jumped!)
Flipping the trigger
Your Identity ~ Future belonging (a primal cue) to move us forward to a goal to belong with certain social groups.
